Home adaptations for Cheshire West residents with disabilities

Adaptations to your home are changes that can make it both safer and easier for you to move around the house and live independently at home. A wide range of home improvements are available and they can be big or small depending on your needs.

Occupational therapy referrals

The council’s Occupational Therapy (OT) Team will refer you to us when they have identified that you need adaptations for your home. If you have not already been contacted by an OT or OT Assessor, your first step is to request an OT assessment from the Cheshire West Community Access Team, please complete the self assessment form via the Council’s online Adult Social Care Portal. If you cannot fill out the form online, please call 0330 123 7034.

Minor adaptations

Usually small, or minor adaptations, such as installing a grab rail to help you get out of the bath, that cost less than £1,000 are free to you with costs covered by the Council. Complete the contact us form to enquire.

Major adaptations

Some larger adaptations, known as major adaptations, may be expensive and require building work.

They could be improvements like;

  • Making your home wheelchair accessible by widening doorways or putting in ramps,
  • Creating walk-in (level access) showers, or
  • Extensions and alterations to provide ground floor facilities like bedrooms and bathrooms.

We know that paperwork can seem daunting, we’ll guide you through making an application for funding major adaptations. We’ll oversee the building work on your behalf; from checking what has been recommended is suitable for your home, right until signing off work when it’s complete.

Disabled Facilities Grants

Disabled Facilities Grants are available for disabled homeowners or anyone who privately rents and needs adaptations costing more than £1,000, up to a maximum of £30,000. This is to pay for adaptations recommended by an Occupational Therapist that would allow you to move around more easily, to use essential facilities, or to stay independent in your own home.

We’ll guide you through the application process and help you to make the changes you need to improve how you live in your home. Find out more.
